The Frankfurt Goethe House

As well as designating the house where the Goethe family lived and the young Johann Wolfgang grew up and experienced his first fame as a poet, this name now also refers to a whole institution that is committed to the memory and the lively communication of Goethe and his intellectual world. The Freies Deutsches Hochstift, which was founded 150 years ago by committed liberal und democratically minded citizens as an association to promote "all free activity in the sciences, arts and general education", was soon to take over the task of preserving and passing on the poet's legacy, as well as taking on responsibility for his parental home.

From that time onward, people have thought of him on Grosser Hirschgraben. They still do so today. With this booklet, published to mark the anniversary, we would like to invite you to rediscover the many-faceted world of the Frankfurt Goethe House.
